"The ambiguities
at the core of a good contemporary realist painting reflects the tension
drawn between pictures' surface and the values they represent. The
exactness of Michael Thompson's paintings both seal their images outside
the sequence of time and perpetuates their immediacy of presence"
Michael Thompson
is widely regarded as one of Canada's most talented high realist
painters. His works are instantly recognizable for their stunning
naturalism, meticulous technique, and tightly focused surfaces. "Ruth"
exemplifies the cafe-scene portraits which Thompson is so well known
for. The direct gaze of the model, so minutely observed, projects the
viewer into the picture, and into a world of subtle drama where
appearances can be deceiving. Thompson is not concerned with
photographic exactness, but with the idea of duality: the fact that, no
matter how completely described, any subject retains a mystery and a
hidden narrative which ultimately remains ambiguous.
